Leeds sign striker Mateo Joseph Fernandez from Espanyol

Leeds United have completed their first piece of business in the January transfer window with the signing of Espanyol’s Mateo Joseph Fernandez – subject to the striker completing a medical at Elland Road.

The 18-year-old is expected to go into Leeds U23 squad upon his arrival in West Yorkshire, with the transfer believed to have cost the Whites in the region of £500,000.

Fernandez has impressed in Espanyol’s B team scoring 44 goals in 56 games across three seasons and was attracting interest from Manchester City and Liverpool prior to signing for United.

However, with the teenager’s contract set to expire in the summer and with Leeds quick to put an offer on the table in early December, the forward will join a promising array of young players at Thorpe Arch.

Despite being born in Spain and having grown up in Barcelona, Fernandez does also qualify to play for England through his parents.

Before he gets to that stage though, breaking into the Whites first-team set-up will be the youngster’s first challenge, and although challenging, it’s an attractive proposition with manager Marcelo Bielsa still searching for a reliable backup to Patrick Bamford.
