Leeds United are expected to be the favorite against Coventry City, and one aspect that the Whites can rely on is their defensive game.
Despite the Whites’ roller-coaster start to the 2024-25 season on the attack, one aspect of their game that has remained consistent is their defense. Last weekend, Leeds recorded another clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City.
The Whites have kept four clean sheets in their last five league outings, so while the attack figures out how to consistently score goals and finish their chances, their defending is holding down the fort.
Illan Meslier previews Leeds’ matchup against Coventry City
Ahead of the clash against the Sky Blues, goalkeeper Illan Meslier spoke with LUTV and spotlighted the club’s ability for a bounce-back win this past weekend on the road following a tough loss at home against promotional rival Burnley.
“It was a good win an important win and react after, unfortunately, the loss against Burnley,” Meslier said, reflecting on the win in South Wales. “It was good to win and to take the clean sheet. We’ve been serious, and we’re now happy to be back at home against Coventry.
“That’s a difficult team because even if they are not well positioned in the table, they are still for me, a play-off team. So it’s difficult and it’s important to not underestimate them. It will be important to score pretty quick, make sure also that we keep the clean sheet and to take the three points, to make Elland Road happy.”
Meslier will need to play a major role on Saturday with Leeds being hit with injuries, but the defense could look different as a key player in the backline could be missing from the matchup.
“Our medical department tries everything to make sure we find a solution in a conservative way,” Farke said on Thursday. “Pascal Struijk struggling a bit with his adductors, Junior Firpo a few problems, was back in training today after missing earlier this week. [Patrick] Bamford missed a training session yesterday after he got a hit but was back on the training pitch today.”
