Leeds United target 13-goal Burnley winger

According to a report from HITC, Leeds United have been linked with Burnley winger Manuel Benson, just days before the end of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year old has been an unused substitute in Burnley’s two league games this season and reports are suggesting that he’s on his way out of the club.

HITC reports that Leeds have strengthened efforts to get Benson to the club after initial approaches for Ajax forward Carlos Forbes and Feyenoord winger Calvin Stengs have slowed down considerably.

Manuel Benson keen on Leeds move

Benson is reportedly eager to make the switch, after rarely featuring for Burnley since 2023. The wide player has often been on the bench and brought on late in games – he only made a total of eight appearances in the Premier League for the club last season. It is easy to understand why he would jump at the chance to leave Turf Moor.

Benson was reportedly looking forward to this new season after the departure of manager Vincent Kompany. In an instagram post, the winger showed his enthusiasm ahead of the new campaign:

“This season is done,” Benson wrote, alongside a tick emoji.

“It has been a tough year, but in a footballer’s life there are many ups and downs, it is all about how we learn and come back stronger.

“Thanks to all the fans for the massive support we always get and the people working at BFC, this is a family.

“See you soon.”

HITC reveals that Leeds United are not the only club interested; Sunderland and Norwich City are also keeping an eye out on Benson, pending possible deals for their players. Jack Clarke has been linked with a move away from Sunderland, and Norwich’s Jonathan Rowe is set to move to France.

Burnley boss admits Manuel Benson could leave

Burnley boss Scott Parker admitted in a press conference that there are a host of players who could depart this week. This undoubtedly includes Benson, who was left on the bench in Burnley’s 1-0 loss to Sunderland this weekend.

“It’s a big week for us, of course,” he said.

“Everyone at the football club is working tirelessly in both aspects to try and bring some players in and no doubt players will be leaving.

“I’ve said it from the outset, players that don’t want to be at the football club and don’t want to be around it, it’s clear that’s not what we’re going to try and develop here.

“I want people here who ultimately want to be part of this and this journey and there’s a couple of little bumps along the way.

“No doubt certain players will be leaving.”

Manuel Benson’s last full season in the Championship was in the 2022/23 season where Burnley stormed to the league title and gained promotion. The forward scored 13 league goals and earned plaudits from managers and pundits alike.

Leeds are looking for senior attacking options to augment the squad after the departure of key players over the past few weeks.
