Leeds United announce friendly game with Elche

Leeds are set to face La Liga side Elche CF in their second friendly during the World Cup break, the club have announced.

The announcement comes as players not featured in the World Cup squads for their national sides returned to training at Thorp Arch at the beginning of this week, with the focus now shifting towards preparing for the return of domestic football when Manchester City visit Elland Road on 28 December.

The match will take place at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero in Spain on Thursday 8 December with kick-off at 19:15 GMT.

This is just over a week before the Whites are due to host another La Liga side, Real Sociedad, at Elland Road in a friendly scheduled for Friday 16 December.

Friendlies against Spanish opposition are not exclusive to Leeds’ first-team however, after it was revealed earlier today that the Under-21s are due to face Spanish giants Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium this Friday [2 December].

Another reasonable test

It is great to see the club continuing to take preparations for the return of domestic football seriously in their arrangement of another friendly, with these fixtures being crucial in assessing the match fitness of individual players and maintaining the sharpness of the team as a whole.

Whilst most Whites fans will be unable to make the trip over to Spain to watch this match, a victory would certainly help create momentum for Leeds’ return to Elland Road to play Sociedad in front of their supporters the following week.

In order to give the side any chance of success against current Premier League champions Manchester City when they travel to Elland Road after the break, generating momentum and belief through achieving convincing wins in these friendlies is crucial.

At the very least, it gives Leeds fans a chance to see their team in action again, something they haven’t been able to do since the 4-3 loss to Tottenham before the break in the season began.
