Leeds United are due a deep cup run and this could be the year

Leeds United are in the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Harrogate Town at Elland Road on Saturday. Promotion to the Premier League is still the priority for the club due to the prestige and the finances involved in playing in the top flight of English football. However, fans are always up for a deep cup run and while in modern football a Championship team winning the FA Cup is nothing but fantasy, the Leeds supporters would love to see their side be in the FA Cup for a few more rounds at least. The Whites have a real chance of progressing deep in the competition if the luck of the draw remains the same.

The heavily rotated team on Saturday night showed that while Daniel Farke wanted his side to progress, the Championship and the automatic promotion race are still the main focus at Elland Road this season. We also saw the returns of Ilia Gruev and Junior Firpo from injuries.

It was not a resounding performance but Leeds managed to be in the fourth round of the FA Cup while ensuring that several of their top players got a bit of a break following a hectic Christmas schedule in the Championship.

Leeds will take on the winner of the game between Millwall and Dagenham & Redbridge, who are scheduled to play tonight, at Elland Road in the next round of the cup competition.

The Whites would be the favourites to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup against either of the two teams and this could be the opportunity for Leeds to have a deep cup run.

Leeds United have been ignoring the cups for a long time

The supporters were not bemused when Leeds United crashed out of the EFL Cup in August. The Whites have been a disappointing cup team for a long time.

They have been trying to either get into the Premier League or survive in the top flight over the last decade or so and therefore, a good cup run has not been a priority for a while.

Leeds have not reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in more than 20 years and they have been getting knocked out of the cups early in recent seasons.

However, a tie at home against either Millwall or Dagenham & Redbridge is a wonderful opportunity to ensure that Leeds reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

A Leeds side should be beating either of the two teams and while a deep run in the FA Cup could stretch the squad, Leeds have enough players to cope with the demands.

A win in the next round, Leeds could be two games away from reaching an FA Cup semi-final, which they have not done since 1987.

While reaching the last four would be a tall task, with some luck in the draw and if Leeds continue to avoid the big guns, the Whites have a great chance of causing some upsets in the cup this season.

Promotion still has to be the priority

Leeds have a terrific chance of reaching the fifth round of the FA Cup as they are the favourites to beat either Millwall or Dagenham & Redbridge at home in the next round.

The Whites fans would love a deep run in the FA Cup and they could be just two wins away from the semi-finals of the competition if they get the job done in the fourth round.

However, Farke is well aware that a deep cup run would mean nothing if Leeds do not get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

They are leading the Championship table and automatic promotion to the Premier League is still the priority for Leeds for the latter half of the season.

The Leeds owners need the prestige and the finances of the Premier League for the plans they have for the cup, including expanding the stadium.

A cup run would definitely bring memories for the fans but the cold hard fact is Leeds need the Premier League more than memorable cup moments at this stage.
