Leeds United boost Wrexham’s promotion hopes

Leeds United were in the market for a midfield in free agency and several targets, eventually, the Whites chose to sign Josuha Guilavogui as a free agent for the rest of the season.

The Whites turned to the free agent market following injuries to captain Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, both crucial players for Daniel Farke. Their extended absence posed a significant challenge for the manager.

After exploring several options, the seven-time French international Guilavogui emerged as the ideal candidate to strengthen the midfield. A Bundesliga legend, he last played for Mainz but made 250 appearances for VfL Wolfsburg as their club captain. He also had a stint in Spain with La Liga giants Atlético Madrid.

Guilavogui agreed to the deal on October 23rd and was awaiting clearance from the EFL. He is now officially a Leeds United player on a contract worth around £1 million (£20,000 per week).

Wrexham newcomer reveals Leeds United interest

Daniel Farke talked about Josuha Guilavogui in the press conference

Wrexham has signed midfielder Matty James and striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, both of whom were free agents after leaving Bristol City and Bolton Wanderers, respectively.

According to the Daily Mail, James attracted interest from Coventry City and Leeds United. Coventry has struggled this season and might have seen James as a potential solution to help them turn things around.

On the other hand, the Yorkshire side are aiming for promotion back to the Premier League and is currently level on points with second-placed Burnley. Farke was looking for a new midfielder as a free agent, with James being one of their top targets.

However, Leeds ultimately opted for former Guilavogui, allowing Wrexham to take James instead.

“I’m over the moon, and can’t wait to get started,” James told Wrexham’s official website. “It was a weird process for me, not being in a routine. I was training at Leicester, which I’m thankful for, but to be back inside a men’s environment here with the lads – they’re a fantastic bunch of lads and I’ve loved every minute so far.”

James was on the bench for Wrexham during Saturday’s match against Charlton Athletic, and he’s eager to make an impact soon. Meanwhile, Guilavogui probably feels the same with Leeds United hoping that the Frenchman provides crucial depth.
