Leeds United chief reveals that the club have solved one big issue with new signings

Leeds United fans will have mixed opinions on what happened in this transfer window. Some will give it a good rating after the club brought in some serious quality, while others will be disappointed about the final days of the window.

After doing most of their recruitment in the middle of the summer, there was one key are of the pitch that still needed reinforcements. Daniel Farke had called upon the club multiple times to add some new faces to the attack.

And since the season started, the problem up front has been obvious. Leeds have scored just two goals this season, with one coming from the penalty spot. The club thought they had agreed terms to sign Fulham star Harry Wilson, but the move broke down before the deadline.

Signing players as a promoted club is always difficult. Especially when they come from ‘bigger’ sides – they always want a way out in case the team goes back down. When Leeds were relegated in 2023, the summer saw an exodus of players with some having relegation clauses in their deals. This made it very difficult for Daniel Farke to figure out his squad that summer.

And with Leeds bringing in 10 new faces in this window, there is cause for concern that history could repeat itself. But according to managing director Ronnie Evans, there has been a change in the contracts of new signings. He said all the new signings do not have relegation clauses that are lower than the fee the player was signed for.

“So every player’s contract is different. I can say categorically we do not have any relegation loan clauses, which I found to be by far the most catastrophic, you lose a player for nothing.

Evans also added that some do not have these clauses at all.

“Some players have relegation sale clauses. All of them are at a price at or above, normally well above, the price we paid for them, and many of them don’t.

“And so it’s a person-to-person basis, based on their leverage.

“But I’m pretty confident that, to a man, any player that comes down, either we’ll be in control of their sale or not, or if they’re sold, I’m comfortable with the return they’ll have generated to make it worth our while to have them.”
