Leeds United’s recent loss to Middlesbrough has raised several questions regarding the club’s defences. Although there was also not much done in the final third with only 3 shots on target, the defence was particularly shaky too.
All the goals came in quick succession with three goals scored between the 50th and 67th minute. This highlighted periods of defensive lapse in the club’s backline.
With Maximilian Wƶber’s possibility of a move, The Whites need to deepen their defence with or without the Austrian. The game against Portsmouth also displayed a lot of frailties in the backline.
As United look forward to strengthening the squad before the transfer deadline, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the club’s interest in a young Premier League defender.
Talking to GiveMeSport, Romano revealed that The Whites are in the race for Chelsea centre-back Bashir Humphreys.
“He’s [Humphreys] considered a target. Another not so easy one, but still a player they have on their shortlist, still a player they’ve been considering, and so also for this one, I would consider Leeds in the race.”

Previously the Italian journalist confirmed Leeds’ interest in the defender. Now, the club seems to be a running horse in the race with a chance of securing the 21-year-old.

Romano also revealed that the deal won’t be easy as The Blues are a stubborn one when it comes to negotiations. However, it is believed that The West Yorkshire outfit are the front-runners in this race.
Chelsea are ready for a loan deal or sale with The Blues preferring the latter. With lots of defenders in Enzo Maresca’s squad, Humphreys would like to ply his trade elsewhere for more minutes.
Having played for Swansea City last season, the 21-year-old impressed in South Wales. Previously he was sent out on loan to 2. Bundesliga side SC Paderborn.
He featured 24 times for the side as he gained interest from Leeds United and Burnley. Many unnamed German sides are also said to be interested in the defender.
A sale seems likely with The Blues preferring a permanent deal but negotiations look tough at the moment. With Leeds United having so many ends to focus on in the transfer market, the club will have to take it one at a time.
Humphreys will be a great addition to the team, adding depth to the backline and providing competition to current players. With Wƶber’s future uncertain at the club, it’d be better if The 49ers added another defender to the squad, just in case.
