Leeds United dealt massive transfer blow

Despite signing Josuha Guilavogui, Leeds United are still in the market for midfield additions.

Ethan Ampadu and Illia Gruev picked up long term injuries earlier this season, leaving the club short of options. Leeds United have had to rely on Rothwell and Tanaka for most of the campaign.

The decision not to replace Archie Gray, Glen Kamara or Georginio Rutter in the middle of the park has caused Leeds some problems this year.

Despite being short in midfield, Leeds United are flying high under Daniel Farke. The German coach has the team in second place in the Championship, three points behind league leaders Sunderland.

Leeds secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Plymouth this weekend, with Brenden Aaronson, Joel Piroe and Dan James among the goals. The Whites have lost one league game since August; the club is planning to reinforce the squad in January and have been linked with this Premier League midfielder.

One player that Leeds will not be signing this January is Los Angeles FC star Lewis O’Brien. The 26-year old is set to stay in America despite interest from England. Leeds were linked with the midfielder back in 2023 but a move never happened.

Alan Nixon reported that the midfielder has a £7million option in his loan deal, with O’Brien keen on staying in the MLS.

After playing just 13 games for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League after they were promoted, O’Brien has moved around. The midfielder went on loan to DC United, Middlesbrough and could now find a home at LAFC.

O’Brien feels at home in Los Angeles and is hoping to win a trophy for the club in the near future:

“The vibe around the place has been completely different since the championship,” said the 26-year-old midfielder, who arrived in Los Angeles this summer on loan from Nottingham Forest. “It’s always good for communities to win things, as well as your own personal team. Hopefully, we can bring a bit of that energy from this week and take it to the game on Sunday.”

Missing out on O’Brien will be a huge blow for Leeds United, but the club have their eye on this free agent who played in the Europa Conference League this season.
