Leeds United defender set for summer departure – right time to cut the cord and move on

Leeds United would have to carry out an overhaul of their squad in the summer if they eventually earn promotion to the Premier League. The struggles of the promoted team this season have made it clear that if Leeds go up they would need to spend big to retool their squad for the top flight. The Whites would have a big budget, but it would not be an unlimited pot and the club would still need to bring in money from player sales to ensure they have more leeway to spend money in the transfer market. It seems Leeds have already agreed on a deal for a departure of a player in the next summer transfer window.

The Whites still have eleven games to negotiate in the Championship season, but they are hopeful of securing automatic promotion in the coming weeks and months.

They are the favourites to go up to the Premier League and are also being backed to get promoted back to the top flight as the Championship winners for the season.

However, speculation over their summer business has already been on an overdrive and the club are expected to strengthen every area of their squad in the next transfer window.

Leeds are aware that they would need several quality players to come in if they want to have a chance of surviving in the Premier League and some feel it could take spending more than £200m.

They also need to bring in money from player sales, and it seems an agreement is now in place for a defender to leave Leeds on a permanent deal in the summer.

Leeds United agree to compromise on fee for defender’s sale in the summer

Rasmus Kristensen is still on Leeds’ books and he has not turned up for the Whites since they got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season.

He spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Roma and left Leeds on loan again when he moved to Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt last summer.

The defender has been a key player for Eintracht this season and the German club have been more than willing to snap him up on a permanent deal.

Eintracht have an option to buy him for a fee of €10m to €12m but they have been keen to renegotiate the deal and sign him for a knocked-down price.

According to Sky Deutschland, a deal is now in place between the two clubs for Kristensen to join the German club on a permanent deal in the summer.

Leeds have agreed to a compromise fee and have consented to a deal worth €6m, which could go up to €8m based on add-ons.

The deal is not official and the two clubs are still working on the fine details of the agreement. But Kristensen is now almost certain to leave Leeds on a permanent deal in the next transfer window.

Leeds are doing the right thing in moving on Kristensen even at a knocked-down price

Kristensen has been away from Leeds for close to two seasons and he never had a way back to Elland Road if the Whites get promoted to the Premier League.

The defender has shown little inclination to play for Leeds since they got relegated and it would have been a shock if Daniel Farke agreed to reintegrate him.

Yes, Leeds are not getting the money they agreed with Eintracht last summer, but it is better to move him on than wait for the extra few million.

The Whites need to start afresh in the summer if they get promoted and they couldn’t have a player hanging around in the training ground who had no future at Elland Road.

It is good to see Leeds sorting out Kristensen’s future well before the summer so they have one less headache to worry about when the transfer window rolls out.
