Leeds United expected to address star’s contract soon – 28-year-old has earned new deal

With Leeds United having booked their place in the Premier League, there are questions this summer that need to be answered. The most important will be what decisions will be made to the first team squad in the transfer window.

The Whites are returning to the English top flight after a long time out. And recently, the gap between newly-promoted teams and the rest of the Premier League continues to grow. It is a much bigger disparity than it was the last time Leeds were in the division.

This summer, Daniel Farke and the club’s recruitment team will have difficult decisions to make about players at the club, and players they plan to bring in.

One of the decisions the club will have to make will involve Junior Firpo. With Leeds making the Premier League, this is a crucial time to evaluate the 28-year old’s future. Over the last two years, he has drastically changed the perception of him, putting in two solid seasons in the Championship. This is in stark contrast to the start of his career when he was struggling in the Premier League.

BBC pundit Aidy White spoke about Firpo’s future at Elland Road:

“Going forward, he has been tremendous, with his goals and his assists”, White said on BBC Radio Leeds.

“He’s out of contract coming up at the end of the season, and whether it’s going to get renewed remains to be seen.

“Maybe that’ll get all sorted once we’ve gotten a little bit more clarity on whether promotion is tonight or whether we have to wait.”

Now that the Whites have secured promotion, there will certainly be talks over Firpo’s contract.

Junior Firpo has done more than enough for a new deal

Over the last two seasons, Firpo has arguably been one of the better performers at Elland Road. He has turned his career around, and is now fit and always available.

The left-back has been a reliable outlet in attack and has chipped in with his fair share of goals and assists. If he leaves Leeds, he will definitely find another club. So there’s more value in tying him down long-term than letting him go for free, especially seeing how reliable he is compared to other options on the market.
