Leeds United interested in signing young Chelsea defender

Leeds United target Chelsea defender Bashir Humphreys

Leeds United drew their first game of the season at Elland Road. The thrilling game against Portsmouth ended in a 3-3 draw as The Whites saw a bumpy start to a promotion-aimed season.

Watching United it was obvious that the team had changed. Even after having a perfect pre-season campaign, The 49ers couldn’t help but jinx it in their first match of the campaign.

There will be reinforcements but there haven’t been any major ones until now. Leeds sorely felt the absence of Crysencio Summerville as the club missed many chances, also lacking creativity in the process.

Things could have been worse though but goals from Pascal Struijk, Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson saved the day. The 49ers could have won but Aaronson missed an absolute sitter firing it wide.

The season didn’t start as planned but things could have been worse. However, after a few hours of the game, reports have come in suggesting Leeds United is interested in signing a young Chelsea defender.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea is keen on selling their academy graduate Bashir Humphreys. Leeds, Burnley and a bunch of other Bundesliga clubs are interested in signing the Championship experienced defender.

“Bashir Humphreys will leave Chelsea in the coming days either on loan or permanent. Leeds United and Burnley among clubs showing concrete interest, Bundesliga clubs also keen as England U21 international will try new chapter. As it stands, Chelsea prefer a sale.”

Humphreys is an England U21 international and has experience playing in the Championship and 2. Bundesliga. While on loan at Swansea, he gained the praises of then-Swans boss Michael Duff.

“I thought Bashir Humphreys was outstanding today, his mentality is great. He was not the only one on the field I could say that about, but for such a young player to be left one v one with someone of Jamie Vardyā€™s quality and experience was impressive.”

“He is quick and makes intelligent runs, so I was very pleased with Bashir today, it was just a pity he was on the wrong end of the scoreline.”

“You can see the competition for places we have in the squad now as players are getting fitter, we have got players making a real impact and pushing from the bench.”

-Michael Duff (ex-Swansea City boss)

As suspected, Leeds United is already looking into the future and planning to sign players who’ll grow with the club into the Prem.
