A Leeds United fan has been banned from attending football matches following an incident on 28th October 2023. The episode occurred before the United-Huddersfield clash at Elland Road in the city centre.
The Whites fan Thomas Stiff who is only a 19-year-old teenager assaulted an official. He punched a police inspector amidst the clash of fans between both clubs.
Thomas fled the scene but was later identified and charged. On August 2nd, Leeds Magistrates Court banned him from attending football games across the UK.
He was also charged a £400 fine, £85 in court costs and ordered to pay £100 in compensation. The rivalry between Leeds United and Huddersfield Town has always been intense.
Before the match, sets of fans from both groups had hostile exchanges both online and offline. This led to skirmishes amongst fans at the Leeds city centre. This is also when the Stiff incident occurred.
West Yorkshire Police Ch Supt Russ Huges commented on the incident,
“Assaults on our officers will not be tolerated and we will always seek to take positive action in these circumstances. As a result of his actions, Stiff has not only found himself out of pocket but also been banned from following his football team for the foreseeable future.”
