Leeds United finalise surprise first January signing on a free transfer

Leeds United are gearing up to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window as they aim to boost their prospects of Premier League survival in the 2025/26 season.

A recent upturn in form has left Daniel Farke operating from a position of greater confidence. Improved performances have stabilised the team and strengthened the Leeds head coach’s hand as he urges the club to invest in January.

Tactical changes have also shaped recruitment priorities. The switch to a 5-3-2 formation has underlined the need for extra attacking options, with Leeds keen to add another striker amid Lukas Nmecha’s ongoing fitness concerns.

However, Leeds are now on the cusp of finalising the arrival of their first signing for the January transfer window, with the club raiding Liverpool for a player.

Leeds United are set to sign teen talent on a free transfer from Liverpool

It emerged recently that Leeds are on the verge of doing a deal to steal 15-year-old winger Kai Morral from Liverpool in the winter transfer window.

Leeds were expected to pay compensation to Liverpool for taking the youngster to Elland Road in January. However, the Whites are doing a better job.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds are set to sign Morrall without having to pay any compensation to Liverpool for this signature in the next window.

Morrall and his representatives have arrived at a mutual agreement with Liverpool to move on from the club in January and join Leeds.

The teenage winger recently played for the Liverpool Under-16s and has featured for Ireland in youth football.

Leeds are finalising the terms of the agreement, and the winger is set to become the club’s first signing of the winter transfer window.

The Whites believe they are signing a player with huge potential, and he will now look to rise through the academy ranks in Yorkshire.

Leeds need to do more such deals

Leeds United have been working to recruit promising young players into their academy with the aim of developing future first-team regulars, but there is clear room for improvement in that area.

A stronger academy pathway would not only reduce the club’s reliance on expensive transfers but also create opportunities to generate significant income through player sales, even if those prospects do not ultimately establish themselves at Elland Road.

Player trading has become a major revenue stream for top clubs, with academy graduates frequently moved on to strengthen balance sheets and help clubs remain compliant with FFP regulations.

With Leeds currently trailing several Premier League rivals in terms of funds raised through player sales, there is a growing need for the club to prioritise identifying and securing elite young talent at an earlier stage.
