Leeds United handed major blow in pursuit of £40m striker – 49ers need to act urgently

It was a quiet January transfer window before Leeds United decided to make some moves this past week. The Whites struck a deal with Brighton for midfielder Facundo Buonanotte.

The Argentine arrived just days after the news emerged, cutting short his loan deal at Chelsea. Reports suggested that the midfielder pushed for a move from his end, believing that he could become a huge part of the team under Daniel Farke. Graham Smyth also revealed that talks over a move began in December, with the deal being wrapped up last week.

Buonanotte was not the only target Leeds had last week; a report from the Athletic stated that the Whites had made an enquiry for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. The Norwegian striker is reportedly keen to leave his team who are currently bottom of the Premier League. Nothing has materialized yet, but interest from Leeds is very strong.

Leeds United could miss out on Jorgen Strand Larsen

It has also been reported in the last couple of days that other clubs are queuing up to sign the Wolves striker. This includes Crystal Palace, with the Eagles the most likely team to make a move after this latest development. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Jean-Philipe Mateta has made his mind up and told the club that he wants to leave this month. Aston Villa, and Juventus lead the pack among a host of other European clubs.

If Mateta leaves, then Palace will be scrambling to find a replacement, with Jorgen Strand Larsen a serious option. The London side will not be afraid to spend, having gotten a fee from Marc Guehi’s sale over the weekend.

49ers need to act fast

The 49ers need to move fast if they want to see Jorgen Strand Larsen at Leeds United. They have already showed their intent, submitting an enquiry, but now they have to submit an offer and get the deal done quickly. Crystal Palace will be eager to sign a striker if Mateta does leave this month; and they are not the only English club looking to add firepower this month.

The ownership must not sit on their hands and allow yet another key target to leave to another team. The attack is an area the Whites need some reinforcements; they have relied on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goals for most of the campaign, and need to add other players who can contribute directly to goals.
