Leeds United handed promotion boost as rivals suffer blow

Shocking news has hit Leeds United promotion rivals in the Championship.

Leeds are currently third in the league after their 1-0 defeat to Millwall on Wednesday night. Japhet Tanganga scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute.

The Lions brought an end to Leeds’ eight game unbeaten run. Daniel Farke’s man had only lost one game since September before Wednesday night.

Farke believes that his side played very well and were just unlucky against Millwall:

“I’m not annoyed at all with our performance – I thought we were excellent. This is a difficult place to go and I think we’ve created more situations in and around their box than the last four away teams here in total.

“You have to stay disciplined in each small situation. We were more or less playing in their half, but there will always be one or two set-piece situations.”

Hull City have been hit with shock news as one of their players could be ruled out for the season. On loan midfielder Oscar Zambrano is believed to have breached CONMEBOLs anti-doping rules.

The club statement from Hull City reads:

“Hull City can confirm that, with immediate effect, CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, has suspended Oscar Zambrano for breaching the anti-doping rules set out in Articles 6 and 7 of the CONMEBOL Anti-Doping Regulations.

“Zambrano and his defence will use their right to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The club is not in a position to provide further information at this time.”

The 20-year-old joined the Tigers from Ecuadorian club LDU Quito on loan in August, with an option to sign on a permanent deal.

Zambrano played when Hull lost to Leeds United in August. Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe were on the scoresheet as Leeds won their first home game in the league.

Daniel Farke has problems of his own

Leeds are still in the market for midfielders after Ethan Ampadu and Illia Gruev suffered long term injuries earlier this season.

Ampadu is back on the pitch, but still has a long way to return. Gruev has also began moving without crutches. This leaves Joe Rothwell, Ao Tanaka and Josuha Guilavogui as the senior midfielders ahead of a hectic schedule from now till the end of the year.

The January window can’t come early enough for Leeds, who are targeting multiple midfielders including a former Academy graduate.
