Leeds United in £25m race for Benfica talent – Everton and Burnley also keen

Leeds United have done decent business in the transfer market thus far, but the club are pushing to bring in more players in the coming weeks to further pad out the squad. Daniel Farke is aware that he will need options in every area of his team to increase their chances of survival in the Premier League next season.

The Whites have spent just a shade over £75m to bring in seven new players this summer. They have so far focused on deepening their midfield and defensive resources for next season, with the arrival of Anton Stach for £17m being their most expensive signing of the transfer window thus far.

Leeds have turned their focus towards signing more forwards in the final month of the transfer window, and they pushed hard but ultimately failed to sign Feyenoord’s Igor Paixao in the last week, who is on the cusp of joining French giants Marseille this summer.

The Whites are prioritising signing attackers at the moment, but the club are still considering more midfield additions to have even more options in the engine room of the team next season.

Leeds United have set their sights on Florentino Luis, but Everton and Burnley are also keen

Leeds have already added Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach to bolster their midfield, but the club remain in the hunt to add one more defensive midfielder.

According to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari, Leeds are among the Premier League clubs who are considering snapping up Benfica’s Florentino Luis this summer.

The Whites have been tracking the Portuguese talent since 2020, and the club are keen to acquire the 25-year-old midfielder this summer.

However, Everton and Burnley have also come forward to show an interest in the player, and there is serious competition for his signature in the ongoing transfer window.

Luis still has two years left on his Benfica contract, and it could take more than £25m to convince the Portuguese giants to sell the player this summer.

Do Leeds need one more midfielder?

Stach and Longstaff have added more strength to their midfield, and they are likely to start when Leeds take on Everton in the opening game of the season next month.

Leeds still have Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruv in their squad, and the club seem well-stocked when it comes to options in defensive midfield.

The club have been tracking Luis for years, but it seems like the wrong summer to sign him, given the players in the squad Farke already has.

Unless the club are considering selling a player like Gruev, it seems like a waste of money to bring in one more defensive midfielder this summer.

Leeds need to reserve their resources for the attacking players, and a winger, a striker and a number 10 will cost them a lot of money this summer.
