Leeds United in the race for 88-goal Premier League hitman – would be a massive coup

Leeds United are the Championship’s top scorers this season and they have been scintillating to watch at times, especially at Elland Road. Joel Piroe is the highest scorer in the Leeds squad with 14 goals and is firmly in the race to win the Golden Boot in the second tier of English football. However, there is an acceptance that Leeds will need to bolster their forward line in the summer if they get promoted to the Premier League. The Whites need a goalscorer who is a proven commodity in the Premier League, which Piroe isn’t and they need to find someone in the market. The club are aware and it seems they are getting ready to try and sign a striker who has a proven record in the top flight.

Piroe has been the top striker for Leeds United this season and seems to be coming good at a crucial juncture of the season. However, beyond the Dutchman, their forward cupboard looks bare with Mateo Joseph struggling to prove himself at this level and Patrick Bamford gradually declining due to constant injuries.

Leeds will sign a striker in the summer regardless of whether they get promoted but if they do go up, they will even need an upgrade on Piroe in the next transfer window.

Goals in the Premier League are going to be crucial if Leeds have to survive in their first season back and they will need to bring in someone who can guarantee a certain return in the top flight.

Strikers go at a premium in the market but it seems Leeds could get a chance to sign a proven goalscorer in the Premier League on a free transfer next summer.

Leeds United are amongst the clubs chasing Callum Wilson

Wilson will be out of contract at the end of the season and Newcastle United are yet to exercise the option to extend it by one more year in the coming months.

He has struggled with back and hamstring injuries all season and has started just one game in all competitions for Newcastle.

With Alexander Isak proving himself at Newcastle, the club have no reason to extend Wilson’s contract and the 32-year-old will likely look for a new club in the summer.

It has been claimed that West Ham boss Graham Potter wants to take him to the London Stadium but according to TBR Football, Leeds are also interested in the forward.

If the Whites go up this season, they will be in the market for a striker and Wilson has emerged as an option for the Whites ahead of the summer window.

He would be available on a free transfer, which appeals to Leeds who would need to bring in several players within a certain budget to raise the overall quality of their squad.

His injury issues are a worry and Leeds will face competition from several other Premier League clubs who will be in the market for strikers next summer.

Signing Wilson would be a coup for the Whites despite injury worries

If Leeds get promoted to the Premier League, they are aware of the challenges they are going to face to survive in the top flight next season.

A rapid overhaul of the squad would have to be carried out but the club do not have a gargantuan budget and would still have to remain within the Premier League’s PSR guidelines.

Strikers are available at a premium, which makes the possibility of signing Wilson an even more tantalising prospect for the Yorkshire giants next summer.

Leeds would need to be mindful of his injury issues as the 32-year-old has had physical struggles in the last 18 months and the Whites already have Bamford.

However, Wilson has 88 goals in the Premier League and remains a lethal finisher in the top flight when fit and available to play.

If Leeds can convince the striker to sign a highly incentivised contract based on how much he ends up playing, signing Wilson is a no-brainer for the club.
