Leeds United ended deadline day without a single signing. Some may point to the fact that the Whites have completed 10 signings in the window, but others feel that there was something missing.
Daniel Farke asked for attacking reinforcements since pre-season and Leeds have only signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor to add to Lukas Nmecha. Now that the window is over, there are suggestions that the Whites could look to the free agent market in order to add some firepower to the team.
Leeds have played four games this season and have only managed two goals.
When the club’s managing director was asked about potential free agent additions, he said:
“I think whether it’s in the window or it’s free agent market only, or it’s January, it’s all about what does the team actually need? What is the opportunity cost, as far as the buy you can’t make later on, or the sale you might have to make out of your current roster? I don’t think right now there’s any need so great that it’s worth going to the free agent market to fill it, in part because I doubt the right player is there.”

What Leeds United have said about signing Josh Brownhill

According to Graham Smyth of the YEP, there have been discussions about a potential move for Brownhill. Earlier this week, the player’s camp revealed that the Whites are one of the sides showing interest. Smyth has revealed that Leeds are weighing up a lot of factors to consider a move.
Ultimately, it may come down to finances. Since Brownhill is a free agent, if he signs on his wages cannot be amortized across the length of his contract like permanent singings or loan signings. Leeds will take a direct hit paying a free agent.
The club will also assess their current options and see if the former Burnley man is someone they desperately need.
Former Burnley star is not a guaranteed success
Despite fans pushing for this signing, Brownhill is not a guaranteed home run of a signing. Last season was the only year of his career that he scored more than seven goals in all competitions.
So rushing to sign him off the back of the last campaign could be a big mistake.
