Leeds United left ‘surprised’ by Leicester City escaping PSR sanctions through a legal technicality

Leicester City’s escaping sanctions from the Premier League for breaking the club’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) has been met with a feeling of surprise at Leeds United.

Leeds and Leicester jostled for promotion in the Championship and while the latter earned automatic promotion, the Whites lost the playoff final to Southampton at Wembley.

Leicester were expected to suffer sanctions from the Premier League for breaching the league’s PSR in the 2022/23 season when they got relegated from the top tier.

A points deduction was expected after an Independent Commission ruled in favour of the league but the decision was appealed by Leicester.

An independent appeals board ruled in favour of Leicester, who successfully argued that by the end of the relevant accounting period, they were no longer a Premier League club and thus, not bound to their financial rules.

A reaction has arrived from Leeds United

Leeds had worries about breaking PSR this season and brought in significant money through player sales to straighten out their books for the ongoing financial year.

The sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham in the summer eventually tilted the scales and helped Leeds avoid breaching PSR.

Leeds have been forced to cut their cloth due to their ambition of returning to the Premier League and want to keep their finances in order, to make sure they don’t break any rules if and when they return to the top flight.

However, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the decision from the appeals board on Leicester has surprised the Yorkshire giants who were working on all deals in the summer with an eye on PSR.
