Leeds United picked up their second consecutive win with a 2-1 victory over Watford on Tuesday night at Elland Road. The Whites’ performance caused one of the opposition’s top players to be rattled in the matchup.
Leeds United got off to a flying start, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. Largie Ramazani struck in the fourth minute, with Brenden Aaronson adding another just three minutes later to give them an early lead.
Watford pulled one back with an early second-half goal, but Leeds United held off their efforts and secured a 2-1 win, taking all three points. Following the midweek action, the Yorkshire side is in third place, leveled with Burnley as the two clubs have 22 points, but the Clarets hold the goal differential tiebreaker.
Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann apologizes to teammates
Following the loss, Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann apologized to his teammates and fans after two early mistakes led to their defeat against Leeds United. The Austrian let Ramazani’s shot slip into the net just three minutes in and later dropped a cross, allowing Brenden Aaronson to score a second.
“The way the game started, it was an uphill battle again, and obviously I’ve let the lads down,” Bachmann told BBC Three Counties Radio. “As a goalkeeper, if you make a mistake, there’s only one outcome. That’s all part of the game but I just feel disappointed because of the way the lads played and deserved a bit more.
“First goal, I couldn’t tell you what it was. Obviously these balls are moving a lot (in the air) these days, (I was) caught in two minds and it slipped through. I’ve been quite fortunate, it’s the first error I’ve made like that throughout my career, and the second one, the cross got deflected, I saw a striker in the corner of my eye, there was a lot of spin on the ball but I’ve got to catch it.”
Leeds United are looking for their third straight win as they head to Ashton Gate to face ninth-placed Bristol City in the Championship. The Robins come off a 2-2 draw with Stoke City, so after back-to-back home wins, Daniel Farke’s side will need to maintain their momentum to stay at the top of the table in this tight race.
