Leeds United must allow Darko Gyabi to remain on loan at Plymouth Argyle

Darko Gyabi might be recalled if Daniel Farke fails to find reinforcements in the midfield

Leeds United are expected to spend money in the winter window to reinforce the squad and boost their promotion hopes in the latter half of the season. The Whites have issues in midfield due to Ilian Gruev’s injury and they are expected to add to their options in the middle of the park.

The Leeds board are expected to make more money available to Daniel Farke as they are desperate to avoid the mistakes they committed in the last January transfer window.

The Whites resisted spending in the last winter window and it came back to haunt them after they just missed out on automatic promotion and suffered heartbreak in the playoff final at the end of last season.

Leeds are looking at midfielders who could be brought in but they also have a chance of recalling a young midfielder who is doing well on loan this season.

Darko Gyabi joined Plymouth on loan last summer. The 21-year-old midfielder is playing regular football and gaining valuable Championship experience under Wayne Rooney.

Leeds have the option of recalling him between 1st January to 7th January and given their problems in midfield, it is easy to see why they might consider doing it.

But Leeds United must resist the temptation…..

Gyabi has started 14 of Plymouth’s 17 Championship games and has been a massive player in the middle of the park for Rooney.

The Plymouth boss has shown massive faith in the young midfielder and he is getting the valuable experience of playing football week-in-week-out at the Championship level.

Plymouth would be keen to hold on to him but the decision is not for them to make, at least in the first week of the winter transfer window. Leeds’ midfield problems could see them taking up the recall option and add one more body to their squad.

However, would such a decision serve anyone?

Plymouth would lose an important player and Gyabi is unlikely to be a certain starter at Leeds. He would be nothing more than an injury cover and it could be detrimental to his development.

Gyabi would be better served if he gets a season of playing regular football at the Championship level at Plymouth and returns to Leeds a better player next summer.

Leeds could either draft him into their squad or command a sizeable transfer fee for a player who has proven himself at the Championship level.

Gyabi could become another Joe Gelhardt if he returns in January

The young midfielder is getting a regular run of games at Plymouth and is learning how to adapt to the rigours of Championship football by being a regular in the starting eleven.

If Leeds United decide to recall him, Gyabi is almost certain to warm the bench as he is unlikely to get in the team ahead of players such as Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka.

There is little to gain from getting him back at Elland Road in January as he is not going to be anything more than extra cover in midfield for Leeds.

The Whites will only devalue him and hurt their chances of getting a good fee for him if they decide to sell the player in the next summer transfer window.

The club could again stall the development of another young player as they did with Joe Gelhardt this season and further devalue him for a potential future sale.

If Leeds have long-term plans for him then Gyabi should continue to experience playing regular first-team football at a Championship club such as Plymouth for the rest of the season.

He will return a better player to Leeds in the summer when they can take a call on his future at the club with the evidence of him playing a complete season at Plymouth.
