Leeds United must start Junior Firpo at Burnley for added attacking impetus

Leeds United sit at the summit of the Championship table going into one of the biggest games of the season tonight at Turf Moor. The Whites will take on Burnley away from home in a game that could have massive consequences towards the end of the season. The weekend’s results have handed the advantage to Leeds and a win tonight will push them further towards achieving automatic promotion to the Premier League. They have an added impetus to be a bit more attacking to get three points and build a considerable lead at the top of the table. Given Burnley’s defensive strength, Leeds will need more attacking players on the pitch to make a difference and it is time Junior Firpo returns to the starting eleven tonight.

Sheffield United’s 3-0 home defeat against Hull City and Sunderland’s 2-2 draw against Plymouth on Saturday have really given both Leeds and Burnley a chance to make strides tonight.

A win for Leeds at Turf Moor will help them open up a five-point lead at the top of the table while three points for the home side will get them into the top two.

We argued that Leeds must ensure that they do not return empty-handed from Burnley tonight but they now have an added impetus to win all three points and build a huge advantage at the top of the table.

Leeds need their attacking players to step up against a Burnley side who have the best defensive record in the league and have conceded just nine goals all season.

The Whites will need extra attacking impetus at Turf Moor to open up Burnley and this is the right time for Daniel Farke to bring back Junior Firpo into the starting eleven after months.

Junior Firpo can be the X-factor from the wide areas tonight

Firpo sustained a hamstring injury towards the end of 2024 and was ruled out for several weeks as he recovered on the sidelines.

He returned to action in the FA Cup third-round win over Harrogate Town earlier this month and was an unused substitute in Leeds’ win over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.

He made his first league appearance since his injury against Norwich City last week and came on in the second half to help his side to a 2-0 win at Elland Road.

The left-back provided more attacking impetus to the team when he came on against the Canaries than the more defensive Sam Byram who is not a natural in that position.

Burnley have conceded just nine goals this season and Leeds will need to be sharper and more creative in attack to prize open the Burnley defence tonight.

It is time for Firpo to get his first start for Leeds since his hamstring injury as his attacking instincts will come in handy for the Whites away from home.

His introduction to the starting eleven will also make Manor Solomon more threatening on the left-hand side as the Burnley defenders will also have to worry about the overlapping and underlapping runs of the left-back.

Leeds will need Firpo to be at this defensive best as well

Firpo can make Leeds more threatening in attack but the team will need his defensive instincts to keep Burnley at bay at Turf Moor tonight.

Burnley will play on the counter even at home tonight as Scott Parker will bank on the home side’s defence to keep the Leeds attackers in check while looking to heat the Whites on the break.

The home side will look to break swiftly on Leeds and Firpo’s attacking instincts could leave the defence a bit exposed for counter-attacks tonight.

Leeds will need to remain patient and ensure that in their zeal to break the Burnley defence, they do not leave themselves exposed at the back at Turf Moor.

The full-backs on both flanks will need to stay alert to the possibility of Burnley breaking from the sides and look to keep the wingers in check by remaining vigilant.

Firpo’s attacking qualities will be needed at Burnley if Leeds have to beat them but he needs to be defensively on point as well to ensure his side get the result they want.
