Leeds United now in ‘active talks’ for £9m attacker after green light for January move

Leeds United are gearing up to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window as they look to cement their push for Premier League survival in the 2025/26 season.

A recent upturn in form has placed Daniel Farke on firmer footing. Improved performances have stabilised the side and strengthened the head coach’s hand as he urges the club to back him in the market.

Tactical adjustments have also influenced recruitment plans. The switch to a 5-3-2 system has highlighted the need for greater attacking depth, with the search for another striker intensified amid Lukas Nmecha’s ongoing fitness concerns.

Leeds are assessing several other attacking options ahead of January, and are now pushing to secure a deal for the signature of Sevilla winger Ruben Vargas in January.

Leeds United in ‘active talks’ for January deal to sign Ruben Vargas

Ruben Vargas has been linked with a move away from Sevilla, who are keen to cash in on the forward to raise funds amid some financial trouble.

Intermediaries have been in touch with several Premier League clubs, and Leeds are among the sides who are now pushing to finalise a January transfer.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds are one of the clubs that are in active talks with intermediaries to work out a deal to sign Vargas in the winter transfer window.

Leeds are trying to understand the margins of the deal, but it has been claimed that Sevilla are prepared to sell for a deal worth just below the £9m figure.

Vargas is aware of the talks behind the scenes and has given the green light to a move to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

Bournemouth and Sunderland are the other two sides in talks with the intermediaries over a potential deal to sign the winger next month.

Sunderland are a problem for Leeds

Leeds were operating under a tight budget in the summer and did themselves no favours by failing to generate significant funds through player sales.

FFP restrictions remain a lingering issue heading into the winter window, but Leeds cannot afford to let another priority target slip away to Sunderland.

The Black Cats showed a greater willingness to stretch financially over the summer to get deals over the line, a gamble that has paid off with them now sitting sixth in the Premier League.

The 49ers must adopt that approach and be prepared to take calculated risks in the market to secure the players Daniel Farke needs to ensure top-flight survival.

If Vargas is indeed a leading target, Leeds have to move decisively and do everything possible to convince the forward that a switch to Elland Road this winter is the right step.
