Leeds United’s return from the FIFA international break started strong with two straight wins, but they stumbled on the road with a scoreless draw against Bristol City FC at Ashton Gate Stadium on Saturday.
The Whites had recently celebrated a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United and a 2-1 win against Watford, both at Elland Road. With that positive momentum, Daniel Farke’s team aimed to carry it into their match against Bristol City, a mid-table opponent.
In the first half, Leeds dominated with eight shots compared to Bristol City’s three, yet neither team could score before halftime. The second half saw Leeds fire off nine shots while Bristol managed only one, but once again, neither side found the net.
After the match, BBC pundit Jon Newsome noted that Farke still hasn’t settled on his ideal number nine this season. While the German boss has stated that Patrick Bamford will have his chance to contribute, Newsome suggested on BBC Radio Leeds that after another lackluster performance, Bamford might soon be pushing for more playing time.
Newsome said, “I don’t know, I think at some point he will definitely be banging on the gaffer’s door asking, ‘when does he get his opportunity?’”
Leeds United outcast needs to leave for career growth

Newsome didn’t just touch on Bamford; he also mentioned another striker, Joe Gelhardt, who he believes must leave Leeds United in search of regular playing time elsewhere.
“He is 22 years of age. If he was 32, it might be a bit of a different story”, Newsome said live on BBC Radio Leeds. “But, you dream of playing, you dream of scoring goals, you dream of playing football matches when you’re a kid.
“Now, he’s at the age where really he’s got to make some difficult decisions because he probably doesn’t want to leave the club. He likes it here, but for him and the betterment of his career, that’s probably what he’s got to do.”
The left-footed striker made the move to Leeds United from Wigan Athletic at just 18 years old in 2020, full of promise. However, his development has hit a bump in the road at Elland Road as he faces tough competition for playing time from Joel Piroe, Mateo Joseph, and Patrick Bamford.
