Leeds United could face a challenge from a Premier League promotion rival looking to bolster their midfield with veteran experience, including someone who has won both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Earlier this month, The Sun reported that clubs from the Premier League and Championship are monitoring a potential move for 34-year-old Jordan Henderson. The Ajax captain has struggled to secure a regular starting position at the Dutch club.
Sunderland captain Dan Neil supports the idea of bringing Liverpool and England legend Jordan Henderson back to his roots. With rumors suggesting Henderson is feeling unsettled at Ajax and may want to return to England, Neil highlighted that the atmosphere in the Sunderland camp is excellent.
“He is a top-quality player,” Neil said about Henderson. “He can come back here if he wants! I’d be a bit nervous telling him what to do! The changing room is buzzing; the squad morale is through the roof. We are on a momentum wave at the minute.
“It has been fearless and everyone trying to build their careers for a few years now. Jack Clarke, Amad Diallo, we are a young team and fearless but also mature for a young team. We are fearless because we will try things in attack, but mature in terms of when the game needs it we can change.”
Leeds United to threaten Sunderland for Championship title?
Despite Sunderland adding a quality player like Henderson to help them get over the line with their promotional push, one pundit fears that Leeds United could be the only club that prevents the Black Cats from winning the Championship.
“Let’s be honest – Leeds I think look very strong,” Niall Quinn stated on talkSPORT (h/t Football League World). “I think they were really unfortunate not to come away with the three points at the Stadium of Light a few weeks ago, and they’ll be up there. You know when the heel of the hunt arrives, they’ll be knocking on the door, and certainly I would fear them, possibly more so than Burnley.”
It’s important to note that if it weren’t for a notable mistake by Illan Meslier when these teams faced off earlier this month, Leeds would only be two points behind Sunderland.
