Leeds United should dominate Cardiff City at Elland Road – stats

Leeds United are preparing to face Cardiff City at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon. The Whites sit at the summit of the Championship table with 60 points from 29 games. They are well-placed to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League. The Yorkshire giants maintained their three-point buffer over third-place Burnley following their 0-0 draw at Turf Moor on Monday night. Leeds will look to consolidate their position and pick up some big points before facing Sunderland and Sheffield United in back-to-back games at the end of February. They are the favourites to beat Cardiff on Saturday and the underlying numbers show that they should dominate and win this weekend at home.

Daniel Farke believes that the point against Burnley was a good result given how strong the home side are defensively and the fact that the Whites remained at the top of the league table.

Leeds United had a chance to build a big lead at the top of the table if they won on Monday night, but the Whites were happy to leave Turf Moor with a point.

The result will look better if Leeds win the games they are expected to and Cardiff’s visit to Elland Road on Saturday is a fixture the Whites must get all three points from.

The Yorkshire giants are the favourites to beat Cardiff and after a cursory look at the underlying numbers of both teams, it’s clear why Leeds are expected to win at Elland Road on Saturday.

Cardiff are expected to sit deep and look to frustrate the Whites but the home side create enough chances in every game to get all three points against any opponent in the Championship.

Leeds United are better than Cardiff in all departments

The Yorkshire giants have been the most consistent team in the Championship this season and there is a sense of predictability about how they play their football.

Farke likes consistency in selection, which leads to control with all the players more or less playing in a certain way week-in-week-out due to the automation they have picked up on the training pitch.

Leeds are by far the better team compared to Cardiff and when we look at the numbers we realise why there are 17 spots and 29 points between the two sides.

Leeds have scored 20 more and conceded 25 fewer goals than Cardiff so far in the Championship. They take more shots and create far more chances than Saturday’s visitors.

The Whites are far more adept defensively and offensively than Cardiff, and there is no reason why they should not pick up three more points this weekend.

Cardiff will have to be defensive on Saturday as they concede 1.5 goals per game and they can’t afford to be adventurous side against a Leeds side who are far better than them when it comes to controlling the midfield and creating chances.

The Whites must take their chances to ensure there are no slip-ups on Saturday

As we have established, Leeds are a far better team than Cardiff and nine out of ten times they should be picking up all three points at Elland Road this weekend.

However, Leeds have an issue in their attack and against a side who are expected to be ultra-defensive on Saturday, it could become a problem as the game progresses.

Leeds create a lot of chances in every game but the Whites have missed more big chances per game than their closest promotion rivals have created this season.

If everything goes according to plan, Leed will create enough chances to beat Cardiff at home on Saturday but they need to take those opportunities

Leeds cannot afford to be wasteful in front of goal this weekend as Cardiff will go ultra defensive and will only show any adventure on the break.

An early goal will settle the players and crowd but if Leeds keep missing chances, then as the game progresses nerves could take over both the supporters and the performers on the pitch.

Create, take your chances and score the goals – this should be Leeds’ mantra against a Cardiff side who are sitting 18th in the Championship standings.
