Leeds United star ‘not happy’ with role – club should definitely sell him

Leeds United are focused on ensuring that they get the job done and secure promotion to the Premier League in the coming months. However, going up to the top flight would also lead to upheaval in their squad and several players are expected to be moved on in the next transfer window. Some could be sold to raise funds and some would be allowed to leave as they are not good enough to play in the Premier League. But there is one player in the squad who could be moved on for both those reasons and he could already be angling for a move away from Elland Road at the end of the ongoing season.

The Whites sit at the summit of the Championship standings and look increasingly likely to be one of the two teams who will end up earning automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Some rival managers are already anointing them as champions-elect and there is palpable anticipation around Elland Road as the team close in on securing promotion to the Premier League.

However, promotion would force Leeds to make some tough choices and several players could be moved on as part of the plans to carry out a major overhaul of the squad.

Leeds would also need to sell well and bring in considerable money if they have to spend big and remain within the regulations of the Premier League’s PSR rules.

There is one player in the Leeds squad who could attract good offers in the summer and it seems he is already laying down the groundwork for his potential departure.

Leeds United star unhappy with his role in the squad at the moment

Wilfried Gnonto was banished from the first-team squad when he tried to force his way out of Elland Road in the summer of 2023, following their relegation from the Premier League.

Daniel Farke reinstated him in the squad after the Italian apologised but made it clear that he would not tolerate another such transgression from the player.

The winger was wanted in the Premier League last summer as well but he didn’t try to force through a move and stayed put at Elland Road.

He started the season as the first-choice winger but struggled for weeks before Farke decided to drop him in December in favour of drafting Manor Solomon into the first eleven.

The Israeli has been superb in the last couple of months while Gnonto has struggled in the limited opportunities he has received since getting dropped.

According to TEAMTalk, the winger is not happy at playing second fiddle to Solomon and Daniel James and could angle for a move away from Elland Road in the summer.

Leeds have not made any decision yet but they would be open to selling him if a considerable offer lands on their table for Gnonto.

The Whites are expected to bring in reinforcements in the wide areas in the summer and a sale of the Italian could help raise funds and make space in their squad.

Leeds should not have second thoughts about selling him

Gnonto was expected to step up to the plate and wear the mantle of being the main man in attack for Leeds this season after Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter moved on from Elland Road last summer.

He has been at Leeds for a while now and is a senior player in the squad. However, he has struggled this season to provide the goals and assists that the Whites would have expected from him.

Gnonto should have been dropped earlier but Farke decided to show faith in him. However, when Solomon replaced him in the team, not a single fan complained.

The Italian should have knuckled down and worked hard to win back his place but he has not looked good enough in the chances he has received since then.

Solomon and James have become undroppable through the weight of their performances and fans would have little sympathy for Gnonto if he is prepared to throw his toys out of the pram at not getting a starting eleven berth.

Leeds should not worry if Gnonto pushes for a move away in the summer as it would only bring in some funds while ensuring that they would be able to sign an upgrade on him.
