Leeds United ended their season winning the Championship, and gaining promotion. This past week, the club released their retained list.
The list is to show which players will be let go at the end of the season. Aside some youth academy players, Josuha Guilavogui is the only exit from the club this summer. Sam Byram and Junior Firpo will hold talks with the club over a new deal. Both players were expected to leave at the end of their contracts this summer.
Byram was emotional after winning his first major title in his career. And he addressed the Leeds fans like he was on his way out. Firpo’s case is much different, the left back had avoided interviews about his future for most of the season.

Then near the end of the campaign, he opened up that he could return to Spain. Even before Leeds’ retained list came out, there were reports that Spanish clubs were eyeing a move to sign him. This week, a report from Spain revealed that Firpo’s former club Betis had not presented an offer. In the report, it was claimed that Leeds had a four-year deal ready for the 28-year old.
Corriere dello Sport have also added this week that Junior Firpo’s representatives have been to Italy. The report further adds that the player’s agency met with Lazio sports director Angelo Mariano Fabiani last week. It was also hinted that it was a general meeting, and not a confirmed deal.
Leeds should move on from Firpo
Junior Firpo had not been open over his future since last year, knowing his contract was up soon. And since the end of the season, his representatives have been busy meeting other clubs. All this shows sign of a player who has made his mind up over his future.
Leeds should not waste any time, the club need to move on and find a replacement this summer.
