Leeds United star shares his blunt thoughts on his future at Elland Road – Leeds must keep him

Leeds United players are focused on returning the club to the Premier League at the business end of the season. However, several of them still do not know whether they will be at Elland Road next season, especially if the Whites get promoted to the Premier League.

Daniel Farke and the rest of the Leeds United squad are preparing to get the team back to winning ways when they take on Swansea City in a big Championship game at Elland Road on Saturday.

However, the club are working on several decisions over recruitment, both in and out, and promotion could lead to a massive squad overhaul in the summer transfer window.

Leeds are expected to spend big in the market if they get promoted, but some of the players who have played a key role this season could be shown the door in the next window.

“It’s not up to me” – Leeds United star explains the situation around his future

Joe Rothwell joined Leeds on loan from Bournemouth last summer and has been a brilliant player for the Whites, especially in a season where Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev have struggled with injuries.

However, there is no certainty on whether Leeds are considering signing him on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

Rothwell insisted that he is loving life at Leeds but conceded that his future at the club is not up to him. He has left it to the agent and Leeds to work out an arrangement.

He also stressed that he has not pushed for any clarification from Leeds either, as he wants to focus on returning the club to the Premier League.

“I’ve said it from day dot, really, I’ve loved my time here, and whether that continues, that’s not up to me”, the midfielder told Leeds Live.

“That’s between the club and my agent, but I’ll just concentrate on doing what I’ve got to do and hopefully help this club get back up to the Premier League.

“I haven’t [asked for any clarifications]. I’ve not looked into it or pushed through [with] it. The full focus is getting the club back up.”

Keeping Rothwell should be a no-brainer

The 30-year-old has been a positive influence on the team, and his performances have played a major part in taking Leeds to the summit of the Championship table.

There are question marks over his suitability in the Premier League, and he was deemed surplus to requirements at Bournemouth last summer.

However, he has found a niche for himself at Leeds and Daniel Farke has managed to get the best of him in the Championship this season.

Leeds will definitely sign midfielders in the summer, with the club getting linked with a move for Kalvin Phillips and Nicolas Raskin ahead of the window.

However, that doesn’t mean Rothwell cannot be a solid squad option next season, and he has already shown this year how valuable he can be coming on from the bench.
