Leeds United suffer Archie Gray transfer blow

Leeds United are still in the news as Tottenham midfielder Archie Gray will reportedly be available in the January transfer window.

Gray left Leeds United this summer for a big fee to join Spurs in the Premier League. His campaign in his first full season of first team action is one of the most impressive in recent history. The midfielder was so good he was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year as a teenager. Gray also won Leeds United Young player of the Year.

Everyone thought the midfielder would immediately become a star in the Premier League, but the transition to top flight football has not been smooth. Gray has barely played in the Premier League this season, but has played every game in the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Reports of Gray leaving Spurs on loan have continued to increase, with some even suggesting he will join another Premier League club. Leeds are still linked with their former player, but there may be a stumbling block. Ian Darke has suggested that Tottenham’s schedule could be the reason why Archie Gray stays:

“What legislates against Gray going back to Leeds on loan is, I think, Tottenham in the Europa League. They need a deep squad because they’ve got a hectic schedule.

“If they only had the Premier League and the domestic cups to think about, it would maybe be a different story.

“Leeds fans would love to see him come back and help deliver promotion, but I’d be more than a little surprised if Spurs allowed it to happen.”

Premier League clubs will really have a hectic schedule after this international break. With more Champions League games and a whole new Club World Cup format, teams will need to use their squad to the full extent.

What happens if the club do not sign Archie Gray?

With Ethan Ampadu and Illia Gruev now starting their recovery process, their return to first team action may be after January. Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have been able deputies, but Leeds are still lacking that spark in the middle of the park. Leeds have recently been linked with this Manchester City star.
