Leeds United suffer huge injury setback – Daniel Farke keeping his fingers crossed

The full Leeds United squad will reassemble later this week after all the international games are done but a player has returned early and not for good reasons. The Whites are sweating over the fitness of the star man ahead of taking on Swansea at Elland Road this weekend.

Leeds United went into the international break leading the Championship but were on a patchy run of form, winning just two of their last five games in the league.

With eight games left in the regular season, Leeds are hoping to hit the ground running when they return to league action against Swansea at home this weekend.

However, even before the full Leeds squad can reassemble, the Whites have suffered a major injury scare after a key player sustained a knock during the international break.

Leeds United returns to Thorp Arch with injury

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Wilfried Gnonto has returned to Leeds after suffering an ankle injury on international duty last week and the club are now sweating over his fitness.

The winger picked up the knock during Italy’s Under-21 friendly against the Netherlands on Friday evening and was substituted at half-time.

Leeds will now assess the extent of his injury this week and whether it is serious enough for him to miss games in the coming days and weeks.

Gnonto impressed in the number 10 role against QPR just ahead of the break and there were suggestions he could be brought in to replace Brenden Aaronson in the starting eleven.

However, those plans need to be put on hold until the extent of the winger’s injury is assessed and Leeds will have an update on him later this week.

Daniel Farke will hope Gnonto has suffered nothing more than a knock

The Leeds boss and his team have been keen to ensure they put their recent patchy for behind them and put Swansea through the sword at home this weekend.

Ethan Ampadu is likely to return to action after recovering from a knee injury but the Leeds boss is now forced to sweat over the fitness of another key man.

Can you name these 10 former Leeds United players?

Gnonto lost his place in the starting eleven in December but his performance in the number 10 role against QPR raised hopes that they have a proper alternative to Aaronson.

However, the Leeds boss will now have to wait on the assessment of Gnonto’s injury and the hope it is not as serious as previously anticipated.
