Leeds United suffer infuriating setback

After an up and down start to the Championship season, Leeds United seem to have found their form and have twice found themselves joint top of the Championship table alongside Sunderland before Burnley leapfrogged them on both occasions.

All Leeds United can do is keep winning and eventually that will be enough to see them sneak into the top two. Arguably, they should be in the top two permanently and would be had they beaten Sunderland like they should have done and would have done if not for an Illian Meslier blunder.

Since then, Leeds United have claimed back to back wins over Sheffield United and Watford, a feat made more impressive by the club’s injury woes at present. Both Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have stepped up to replace the injured Ilia Gruev and skipper Ethan Ampadu. Leeds have also been pragmatic, turning to the free agent market to find reinforcements. The club are set to announce the signing of Josuha Guilavogui. The French international could even be available for Saturday’s game with Bristol City, but ahead of that game Leeds United have suffered a frustrating double blow.

Sky Bet Championship Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United Junior Firpo of Leeds United applauds the travelling fans during the Sky Bet Championship match Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United at Hillsborough.

It’s vital that Leeds keep winning, after all the slightest mistake can be costly as we saw last season with Leeds missing out on promotion despite a stunning season.

So, it’s important that Leeds make it three wins on the spin on Saturday lunchtime but they will have to do it without two of their key men.

After scoring the opening goal in the 2-1 win over Watford, Largie Ramazani was forced off with an ankle injury which Daniel Farke has said will rule him out of the game against Bristol City on Saturday.

But the more infuriating loss is that of Junior Firpo. The fullback is known for collecting yellow cards, and now on five he will miss the game on Saturday in what could be a decisive blow for Daniel Farke and his side. Farke has options in the position such as Sam Bryam but it could also be  Isaac Schmidt’s chance to announce himself after joining on deadline day. But can either replace the quality Firpo has delivered this season, with assists galore?
