Leeds United eye academy graduate for squad boost

With the frontline struggling for depth, Leeds United will need to find new reinforcements soon. After the departure of Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto has taken charge on the left flank.

It was the Italian’s preferred position from the start but Summerville in the squad meant Gnonto would lead the right. Now that The Dutchman is gone, Gnonto is excelling in his preferred position as he also scored a curler against Portsmouth.

The match ended in a draw but the players looked good with just a few new roles required. As Wilfried is now playing on the left, there is an opening on the right.

Brenden Aaronson or Georginio Rutter can fill in but both prefer a more central role. If there are new signings to replace Summerville such as the likes of Jonathan Rowe, Gnonto will be back on the right again.

But, what if the position remains open following failure to sign a Summerville replacement or if Gnonto leaves as the rumours suggest? Leeds United have capable players but they could still use reinforcements or players willing to play the position.

According to TEAMtalk, there has been such a winger linked to the club. Leeds academy graduate Jack Clarke who currently plays for Sunderland fits the bill.

Although Clarke is primarily a left winger he is quite versatile. He can play on the right flank on Elland Road and can provide good cover or take the role on the right flank at Elland Road.

The 23-year-old winger has scored 28 goals and assisted 22 in 113 appearances for Sunderland. These are not outlandish figures but at his age, the former U20 England international can still develop.

He still has a goal involvement per 2.26 games. Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison believes that he can be a sharp signing for The Whites.

“Why not, Leeds United are a huge football club. In saying that, Jack Clarke is already at a huge club in Sunderland, so heā€™ll have to weigh it up if he thinks he can get promoted with Sunderland because you never know”

“I think Leeds are one of the favourites to go up, so it would make sense for him to want that move. What Clarke has done for Sunderland since arriving has been amazing, the way he slows people down and goes past them makes him a very good winger.”
