Leeds United target Manchester City midfielder

Leeds United have their heart set on improving again next season and pushing the sides inside the top six. In order to do so, positive recruitment is required over the summer. Plenty of targets have been linked to Elland Road in recent weeks and one has just received glowing praise that should make United fans excited.

Yangel Herrera is one of the hot properties going into this summer’s transfer window. The 23-year-old has impressed in his time on loan at Granada making over 60 appearances for the Spanish side. The defensive midfielder was also a key part of Venezuela’s hopes in the Copa America, however an injury has now forced him out of the tournament meaning his focus will likely shift to where he’ll be playing football next season.

Parent club Manchester City are open to offers and plenty of clubs are after Herrera’s signature after his loan spell at Granada came to an end. The likes of West Ham are also said to be interested in his services. Valued at little under £20 million, he would be a massive asset to Leeds  given their poor track record when Kalvin Phillips is out injured. Moreover, his versatility makes him a Marcelo Bielsa player.

He was central to Granada going deep into the Europa League last season. His ability to play two games in a week whilst still being incredibly robust was massive for the side.

Despite not yet playing a single competitive minute for Man City, Herrera has nearly 150 club appearances to his name and spent two years on loan at New York City in 2017 and 2018, playing alongside Leeds winger Jack Harrison in his first season.

Furthermore, he has played 21 times for Venezuala and has been a regular for his national team since making his debut in 2016.

If you still doubt Herrera’s quality, you should see the glowing recommendation of La Liga expert Euan McTear. He told This Is Futbol: “He was so good even when he didn’t get that opportunity to be in a settled side last year.

“Granada didn’t have the squad for playing European football so to be playing twice a week in this congested season, having to go through the qualifying rounds, their team was getting changed by two or three players every week.

“He was one of the few consistent players other than the goalkeeper and the centre-backs so just the fact that he was so good, even in an unsettled side, logically you’d think if he had some time, it could only be a good thing.”

As a potential transfer, he looks ideal for Leeds. He offers consistency in performance and availability, versatility and squad depth. If Leeds can make it happen, they should.
