Leeds United eye Burnley’s Angolan winger ahead of transfer deadline

Following high-profile departures this summer, Leeds United is working on replacing these players. There have been some signings, but nothing major has yet come out of the transfer window.

Crysencio Summerville, Glen Kamara and Archie Gray have been the major departures this summer. Glen Kamara left for France with only a season at Elland Road.

Archie Gray was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for Ā£35 million. This was one of Leeds fans’ biggest shockers as they hoped their academy graduate would stay at Elland Road.

Crysencio Summerville’s departure was one of the most impactful ones. Making 31 goal contributions last season, the Dutchman also won the Championship Player of the Season award for his performances.

The club is yet to find a replacement for Summerville and Jonathan Rowe has been identified as the top contender for the role. With a Ā£7 million offer rejected, The Whites are said to be preparing a better offer to swoop in the Englishman.

Marseille was also in the mix to sign Rowe. However, a high transfer fee caused the club to drop their interest in the winger. Now valued at Ā£15 million by Norwich City, The 49ers will look forward to gaining the upper hand as they remain sole bidders for the player.

According to Claudio Reulens, Leeds United are targeting Burnley’s Manuel Benson for a second time. As the winger had a tough time in the Premier League, the player is rumoured to leave Turf Moor this summer.

“There may still be some movement around Manuel Benson. Leeds United remains a candidate. Return to (Belgium) is not an option. #Burnely”

The Belgium-born footballer had also been linked to move to Elland Road in January. However, then Clarets coach Vincent Kompany convinced the winger to stay.

As mentioned, a return to Belgium isn’t on the cards, leaving Leeds as the sole candidate for Benson’s services. Born in Belgium, Manuel represents Angola at the international level.

He started his career at Lokeren, the club his father played for before finally settling at Lierse. There was a stint small stint with Anderlecht during his youth career as later he never played for them again.

The Angolan started his senior career with Lierse and has also played for various Belgian clubs including Genk and Royal Antwerp. A loan to the Netherlands saw his career take him on a permanent move to England.

A rugged 2023/24 season saw him making only nine appearances for Burnley. The winger will be keen on leaving as his contract expires in 2027 with no hopeful future at the club.
