Leeds United tipped to make “signing of the window” in January

Leeds United have been linked with a transfer target that could improve one area of Daniel Farke’s team.

Leeds have been in the market for midfielders after injury struck the team just months into the new season. Daniel Farke called on the services of free agent Josuha Guilavogui when Ethan Ampadu and Illia Gruev were out injured with serious injuries. Summer signings Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have had to step in but there is still a lack of bodies in the middle of the park.

The team will need reinforcements if they want to make a serious push for promotion. Leeds have been firing in attack, with 24 goals scored which is the second highest in the Championship.

However the team have struggled to create against stubborn sides. A recent example was against Millwall, where the team failed to create any meaningful chances after conceding in the first half.

Leeds United have set their sights on Manchester City midfielder James McAtee. Pep Guardiola has said he wants to keep the 22-year old as part of his first team plans, but McAtee is yet to start a Premier League game this season. Leeds will have fight on their hands to land their target as multiple clubs have also lined up for McAtee. The likes of Fulham, West Ham, and Southampton are firmly in the race alongside Lens and Lille.

Leeds United supporter Conor McGilligan has made his views clear on the club’s interest in the Premier League star:

“Probably be the signing of the window. But can you have him, Piroe, and Aaronson all competing at points for the 10 role?” He wrote on X.

With Ampadu and Gruev set to miss the rest of 2024, a midfield signing would be ideal. No one knows if the current duo of Tanaka and Rothwell will stay fit during the festive schedule. Josuha Guilavogui is still getting up to speed and is not ready to start immediately.

Is McGilligan right?

McAtee’s versatility means he can play in midfield and attack. He doesn’t just play the number 10 role exclusively. The 22-year old can also play behind the striker and even as a strike partner as he showed on loan at Sheffield United a few seasons ago. Leeds can absolutely afford to have him, Aaronson and Piroe in the same team.
