Leeds United tipped to sign £25m England international after major transfer call

Leeds United look increasingly likely to strengthen their goalkeeping department this summer as several key developments continue to unfold.

The club remain in discussions with Karl Darlow over a contract extension and are keen for the experienced Welshman to stay at Elland Road for at least another season.

However, there is still uncertainty surrounding his future. Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Darlow as an experienced understudy to Senne Lammens, leaving Leeds unsure whether they will be able to retain him.

As a result, the Whites may have to step up their search for a new goalkeeper sooner than expected, rather than waiting for Darlow’s situation to be resolved.

In fact, there is growing speculation that Leeds could soon move to secure the signing of an experienced Premier League shot-stopper, with the club having already been tipped to complete such a deal this summer.

Leeds United have been backed to sign Aaron Ramsdale

The Whites are in the market for a goalkeeper, and they have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope this summer.

However, Ipswich Town’s interest in Pope is a complicating factor, and it has been claimed that he is also not a priority target for Leeds in the ongoing window.

Former Premier League scout Mick Brown feels Leeds should consider snapping up Aaron Ramsdale after he left Newcastle at the end of his loan stint.

He stressed that Ramsdale is a proven commodity in the Premier League and just needs a club to show faith in his ability next season.

“Leeds are in the market for a new goalkeeper, so they will be aware of his availability”,  Brown told Football Insider.

“Ramsdale is likely to leave Southampton, and it’s clear he won’t be staying at Newcastle, so somebody like Leeds could well be tempted to take a gamble on him.

“He’s not had the best season, Ramsdale. It seemed like he could never really nail down a place in the Newcastle team, so he will be keen to play more regularly.

“It wasn’t that long ago that he was an England international, so the quality is there if somebody is willing to give him the chance.

“If Leeds aren’t going to sign Nick Pope, and I expect that is the case, then his teammate from last season could certainly be an option.

“He’s a good goalkeeper, Ramsdale. Maybe not a top, top option that Leeds might hope for, but he could certainly do a job and would be an upgrade on what they’ve got.”

He will be a major gamble

Ramsdale was in the England squad until recently and wants regular football next season to earn his place back in the Three Lions set-up.

However, any move for him would be a major gamble as Ramsdale’s stock has dropped in the last couple of seasons.

He was part of the Southampton team that suffered relegation from the Premier League and struggled to display Pope in the Newcastle goal last season.

Newcastle’s decision to sign a new goalkeeper shows that they had no interest in extending Ramsdale’s stay at St. James’ Park this summer.

He will definitely leave Southampton this summer, but Leeds should think twice before trying to sign him. However, they do need a goalkeeper, and Ramsdale is Premier League-proven.

Aaron Ramsdale? There are better options out there, especially at the prices quoted in more than one media outlet. In addition, is he any better than Lukas Perri?
