Leeds United tipped to sign £30M ‘gamble’ – multiple Premier League clubs have shown interest

Leeds United have set out to improve a few areas in the squad as they prepare for the Premier League. So far, one player has been announced over the weekend.

German forward Lukas Nmecha will join Leeds United on a free transfer. He will be officially a Whites player next month when his contract with Wolfsburg expires.

Leeds are also planning major moves in other areas of the squad. A deal for Udinese star Jaka Bijol is still being worked on, with belief that it could be completed soon. There have also been reports that a new midfielder is on the list for Daniel Farke.

Leeds are still being linked with a move for Southampton star Mateus Fernandes. The Saints initially laughed off reports of bids being made, and there has been no deal so far. But it is believed that the Whites could eventually make a move.

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has warned Leeds, and other clubs, that paying big money for the youngster could be a gamble:

“Fernandes was one of the very, very few bright sparks at Southampton last season,” he told FLW.

“He played a lot of football for someone so young – just 20, nearly 21. Having said all of that, £30 million is a huge fee, really, for clubs like Leeds, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

“You’re paying that for potential, so it would be a massive gamble, as it is with all young players that have more or less had two seasons of senior football.

“We’ll see, but it would be a gamble for any of those clubs to pay that kind of money for him.”

Fernandes could be a gamble

Multiple reports are suggesting that Southampton want £30million for Fernandes. This would be a huge chunk of Leeds’ transfer budget gone. Aside that, the only thing the Portuguese midfielder has on his side is age. He is yet to show that he deserves such a price tag even with how he played last season. Leeds would be better off looking elsewhere for midfielders.
