Leeds United produced another commanding performance on Tuesday night when they swatted aside Watford at Vicarage Road to go five points clear at the top of the Championship table. The Whites are marching towards ensuring automatic promotion and look poised to play in the Premier League. With promotion looking likely, some of the chatter is turning towards the summer and what the squad would require to give them a chance of surviving in the Premier League next season. Leeds are expected to bring in several reinforcements to raise the level of the squad and some of the players could be familiar names Daniel Farke worked with previously.
The Whites do not want to tempt fate after last season’s playoff final heartbreak, but it would be unwise if people inside the club are already not gearing up for the summer.
Leeds United are increasingly looking likely to be one of the teams, if not the outright Championship winners, to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Their form and consistency until now have ensured that they have a bigger margin for error but at the moment, they do not look like losing a game against anybody.
With Leeds seemingly on their way back to the Premier League, the rumour mill has started churning out stories about players who could join the Whites in the summer transfer window.
Daniel Farke is aware that he will need several new players in the summer if Leeds are back up and it would not be odd if he would push for a few who he knows of.
Midfielder close to Daniel Farke could join Leeds United in the summer
Leeds are expected to strengthen every area of the squad in the summer as this season has shown that excellence in the Championship counts for nothing in the Premier League.
All three sides in the bottom three of the top flight got promoted from the Championship last year and Leeds are well aware of the challenges that lie ahead if they go up.
Farke will need better quality players across the board and it has been claimed one of those could arrive from Germany in the next summer transfer window.
Ao Tanaka’s success this season shows Leeds could find bargains in Germany and according to Bild, Borussia Monchengladbach star Julian Weigl could join Leeds in the coming months.
Gladbach are yet to take a call on whether to sell him but the 29-year-old is one of the players who could be sold to raise funds from the market.
A move to England appeals to him and Farke knows Weigl well from his time at Gladbach and would be keen to take him to Leeds in the summer transfer window.
The defensive midfielder has six international caps. He is a vastly experienced player in the Bundesliga and has even played in the Portuguese top flight.
Weigl will add top-flight experience and depth to Leeds’ midfield
Leeds have Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell in their squad for the midfield roles and all four players have been a big part of their success.
However, there are question marks over whether Leeds would be prepared to sign Rothwell on a permanent deal and Farke would certainly want to add more quality in that area of the squad.
Weigl represents a player who Farke knows about and his experience at the top level will come in handy for a Leeds squad that would be fighting for survival in the Premier League.

Ampadu has been a brilliant player and captain for Leeds but he is unproven in the Premier League and while Ao Tanaka looks suited for the Premier League, he will still have to prove himself.
Adding a player of Weigl’s quality and experience to the Leeds midfield will only be beneficial for a team that would be up against it for most of the season if they get promoted.
