Leeds United to battle two Premier League rivals to sign £14m rated defender – it makes a lot of sense

Jayden Oosterwolde

Leeds United have moved fast to add some attacking reinforcements to the team. Last week, they completed the signing of Facundo Buonanotte on loan for the rest of the season.

Reports indicate that talks over the move started in December, and the player was very open to moving to Elland Road. So Buonanotte cut short his loan deal to Chelsea to make the move possible. Leeds do not seem to be done yet; they are keeping an eye on Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen. Even though the Norwegian striker is valued around £40 million, there is belief that a deal can be done.

Leeds United Center Backs This Season (PL)
Player Games Played Starts Minutes Played
Joe Rodon 20 20 1740
Pascal Struijk 20 19 1718
Jaka Bijol 12 11 1165
Sebastiaan Bornauw 6 2 309

But there is still one area of the pitch the club need to address before the window closes. Before January began, reports suggested that Leeds were in the market for defensive cover. This became very clear after the injury to Joe Rodon a couple of weeks ago. Sebastiaan Bornauw’s status at Elland Road is still up in the air, which makes securing that part of the pitch even more important.

Leeds United to battle two English sides for Jayden Oosterwolde

Reports have emerged that a new defender is on the club’s radar. According to the Sun, Leeds are one of three Premier League clubs eyeing a move for Fenerbahce defender Jayden Oosterwolde. Crystal Palace are one of the teams interested, after losing their best defender and captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City. No official bid has been submitted, but there is belief that the Eagles will make a move soon.

Nottingham Forest are the other English club interested; Sean Dyche’s side have not had the best of seasons and are looking at the January window as an opportunity to refresh the squad for the second half of the season.

Smart move from the club

For now, Jayden Oosterwolde is just a target on the club’s radar. But a move for the 24-year old makes a lof sense. The defender is at a very good age, and could come in and slot nicely into the first team. He also has some experience under his belt so he would not need a lot of time to adjust to English football.

Adding him provides cover in a key area of the team and provides an upgrade in the position. With the future of Sebastiaan Bornauw unknown, it will be a smart decision by the club to get someone in the door before they are eventually left without options.
