Leeds United to consider stunning January transfer swoop

It’s been a busy and exciting week for Leeds United fans, which peaked with the news of a new signing in the shape of France international Josuha Guilavogui.

The club confirmed the exciting news on Wednesday with the following statement:

“Leeds United are pleased to confirm the signing of Josuha Guilavogui on a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season, subject to a work permit.

“The Whites have secured the services of the 34-year-old former French international, who can play in midfield and defence, after he became a free agent following his departure from Bundesliga side Mainz 05, over the summer.

“Guilavogui began his career with Saint Etienne in France, playing over 100 times for the club after progressing through the youth system. Whilst with Les Verts, he helped the team to win the Coupe de la Ligue in 2012/13.”

A very big boost for Leeds, but it may not be where their midfield recruitment ends given the injuries to both Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev, meaning an over reliance on Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka who have both stepped up in recent weeks.

Leeds United to consider transfer swoop for former star

Kalvin Phillips was once beloved by the Elland Road faithful, and many couldn’t begrudge the England international a shot at cementing himself as a Premier League star as Leeds suffered relegation.

The midfielder earnt a move to Manchester City and was part of their squad that won the treble, but was used sparingly to say the least. This resulted in an ill-fated stint at West Ham United prior to a switch to Ipswich Town, but at his new club there are already concerns.

Reports claim that Phillips wants to leave the club and return to Leeds United, with reports suggesting Leeds would consider agreeing a deal with him to bolster their midfield options.

It is a situation worth considering for Leeds, but one where the financial side of things will halt them in their tracks. If a deal can be struck, he will lesson the injury strain in midfield.
