Leeds United are focused on getting the job done and securing automatic promotion to the Premier League this season. However, there is now a real expectation for the Whites to get promoted to the top flight and it has led to the rumour mill going on an overdrive about their potential summer recruitment drive. Leeds would need quality additions across the squad if they want to give themselves a decent chance of surviving in the top flight. The Whites are almost certain to add a forward or two to their squad for more attacking impetus. A list of four strikers is being closely assessed and it seems they are really keen on adding one of those attackers to their squad in the summer transfer window.
The Sheffield United game is dominating the minds of the Leeds United players and their fans as they prepare for a big night at Bramall Lane tonight.
However, there are officials inside Leeds who are already working on a plan for the summer where they are expected to go on their recruitment drive as a newly-promoted Premier League club.
With Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton now favourites to come back straight down this season, the gulf between the Premier League and the Championship has never been this wider and it is clear how hard a task it would be for Leeds to survive in their first year back in the top flight if they go up.
Goals are gold dust in the Premier League and Leeds are aware that they would need forwards who could hit the back of the net regularly in the top flight to have any chance of survival.
Leeds are keeping tabs on several strikers but they are willing to go back for a forward they were keen to sign in the January transfer window.
Leeds United to make ‘progress’ in a deal to sign Cameron Archer in the summer
Leeds wanted to sign Archer on loan from Southampton in the winter transfer but the Saints refused to enter the offer the Whites made for the attacker.
They were not keen to sell the striker in the winter window but with them expected to get relegated, Archer is almost certain to leave the club in the summer.
A move to Leeds appeals to him and he would be keen to move to Elland Road if they could work out an agreement with the south coast club in the next transfer window.
It has been claimed that journalist Ben Jacobs, even Leeds are still interested in taking him to West Yorkshire if they get promoted to the Premier League.
He stressed over the course of the summer transfer, Leeds will revisit a deal to sign the forward from Southampton as he continues to remain a prominent name on their shortlist of targets.
“Cameron Archer was Leeds’ number one target as far as the striker was concerned, and it was no failing on the part of Leeds”, Jacobs told GiveMeSport.
“It was just down to the fact that Southampton were reluctant to sell, and Leeds tried until the end, but Southampton’s position didn’t change.
“So my expectation is, with Southampton likely to go down and Leeds on track to come up, that Leeds will revisit the Cameron Archer deal, and over the course of a long summer, potentially make more progress there.
“Archer is keen on the move. Leeds value the fact that he can play centrally or out wide. And Archer will remain on Leeds’ shortlist heading into the summer.”
Leeds seem obsessed with Cameron Archer
Archer’s record in the Premier League this season is nothing to write home about as he has scored just twice in 23 appearances for Southampton.
Leeds fans are right to feel worried about their club wanting to sign a striker who has done very little this term to help the Saints try to survive in the top flight.
For starts, if Leeds want him him, it means Farke is backing himself to get more out of the forward than Southampton have managed this season and secondly, it’s his versatility that attracts the Whites.
Can you name these 10 Leeds United players from the 2000s?
Farke wants different options in his squad and Archer’s ability to play both centrally and out wide is something that would make him a useful player in the squad.
Leeds are still expected to invest in a proper number 9 who can score goals in the Premier League but the Southampton star will be a good option to have in the squad.
Given Leeds have been chasing the forward since January, it seems they remain determined to ensure Archer ends up at Elland Road sooner rather than late.
Leeds obsessively chased Daniel James for a few years before he joined the Whites and it seems Archer will go a similar path.
The Leeds board and the fans need to back the manager in the transfer window if they get promoted and trust him to bring in the players who he feels can do a job in his team.
