5 players Leeds United should sell in January to increase transfer budget

Leeds United transfer rumours

The January window is fast approaching, and some Leeds United transfers could happen in the next couple of weeks. At this point of the season, it is not far fetched that the club already has their eye on reinforcements.

The Whites are currently four points above the relegation zone in the Premier League. So far, they have performed above expectations with some of their results this season.

However, problems continue to affect the team on the pitch. Leeds failed to add a potent finisher in the offseason, choosing to bring in Lukas Nmecha, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor. None of these three have shown they can consistently score goals in this team. Lucky for Daniel Farke, the January window is near the corner.

Leeds can reinforce their squad when the transfer window opens. The problem is that the funds for that window will be limed to PSR. And most likely, the Whites will need to sell some first team players in order to have a decent budget in January.

There could be a few Leeds United transfers made in January if there are funds. Recent reports have emerged that the club will analyze their current state and decide if they should move when the transfer window opens.

This current squad has a lot of potential players with huge value that can be sold to boost transfer funds. Some have already been linked with moves away, while others now clearly have no part to play under Daniel Farke.

Illan Meslier

The French stopper is out of contract next summer, and clearly has no chance of getting back into the first team this season. Leeds will hope that they can get a fee for a player who can agree to a pre-contract in the next few months.

Ilia Gruev

Gruev is clearly at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to the current midfield options. He has barely featured this season, and with the performances of his teammates, he will not get into the team barring injury. The midfielder has some value considering his age and experience.

Joel Piroe

Arguably the most valuable player Leeds can sell in January. He has been a benchwarmer for most of the season, but his goal record in previous years could entice some teams to take a chance on him. Piroe was linked with a move to the Eredivisie this summer.

Joe Gelhardt

Leeds can also make good money off Joe Gelhardt – he is on top form for Hull City this season. He is also at a great age in a position where teams would pay good money for talent.

Mateo Joseph

The forward has featured in almost every game on loan this season. This past summer, he was valued around £12 million – if Leeds get anywhere close to this fee in January, they will take it.

Realistically speaking, there are two deals that Leeds United can cash in on when January comes around. Joe Gelhardt and Mateo Joseph are performing well out on loan and it would not take much convincing for the loan clubs to trigger a deal.

Player Club Games Played Goals Assists
Mateo Joseph Mallorca 11 2 1
Joe Gelhardt Hull City 15 6 2

Both players are finally realizing their potential that they could not show at Elland Road. Transfermarkt values Gelhardt at £2.6 million and Joseph at £3 million at this moment. But knowing the reality of today’s transfers, they could both easily be sold for at least double of this value.

With Lukas Nmecha, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin under contract for the next two years, selling Mateo Joseph and Joe Gelhardt could be the best option for Leeds.
