Leeds United’s stance on Junior Firpo clarified – The club must sign him if promotion is secured

Junior Firpo is set to be out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a free transfer away from Leeds United in the summer. Three Spanish clubs have already approached him and a return to Spain appeals to the player. However, no decision has been made either way, and Leeds are also keen to keep all options open until the end of the season.

The left-back has been one of Leeds’ best players this season and his performances have led to suggestions that he could be in contention for the Player of the Year award at Elland Road.

Junior Firpo is almost certain to leave Leeds if they do not get promoted and no one is likely to begrudge him a return to Spain if the Whites are again in the Championship next season.

However, if Leeds get promoted to the Premier League, it could become interesting despite the defender having offers on his table to return to Spain in the summer transfer window.

Leed are yet to decide on Junior Firpo

Firpo’s situation will remain in a veil of uncertainty until Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League and there are no talks on the horizon.

Daniel Farke has made it clear no negotiations over a new deal will be entertained until the end of the season when Leeds will know which division they will be plying their trade in next term.

Firpo and the rest of the Leeds team are focused on getting promoted and a return to the Premier League will provide the club with a better chance of holding on to him.

According to The Athletic, Leeds have agreed on nothing yet and Firpo is also yet to give his consent to a transfer at the end of the season.

The club’s league status will dictate everything and the defender could still be offered a new deal if the Whites are in the Premier League next term.

Leeds are also considering holding on to Firpo while signing another left-back who could start ahead of him in the top flight if they get promoted.

Holding on to the defender makes sense

Firpo’s poor performance in the Premier League previously is often used as an excuse by some who do not want Leeds to offer him a new deal if they get promoted.

However, in his defence, it is easy to argue that the Dominican was playing in a poor Leeds side that were in decline under Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch.

Not much was going right in that Leeds team and it would not be a surprise if Firpo does better in the Premier League if a better team around him.

However, it is almost certain that he needs to improve defensively as Leeds can’t be this attacking in the Premier League if they want to survive in their first season back.

Having another left-back will also ease the pressure on Firpo and give the manager an option to pick and choose games for either full-back in the top flight.
