Leeds United returned from the international break on Friday night with a vital 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at Elland Road, an important result against a fellow promotion contender.
After a scoreless first half, Leeds United found their stride in the second. Pascal Struijk opened the scoring in the 69th minute, and Mateo Joseph added a late goal in the 90th, ensuring all three points.
Illan Meslier, coming off a draw with Sunderland, delivered a strong performance, keeping a clean sheet. After draws against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City, and Sunderland, along with a loss to Burnley, this win provides a much-needed confidence boost.
Pundit offers his reaction to Leeds’ win over Sheffield United
While providing co-commentary for Sky Sports during Saturday’s draw between Oxford and West Bromwich Albion, Don Goodman expressed his admiration for Leeds United.
“Impressive weren’t they last night, Leeds United? They looked the real deal,” Goodman said (h/t MOT Leeds News).
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder praised Leeds for their impressive style of play, adding that they are easily the best team his side has faced this season.
“I don’t think I’m being controversial when I say I think anybody who finishes above Leeds – and I’m not sure anybody will do from what we’ve seen of them, our analysis and the games they’ve played – (will win the league),” Wilder said.
“They’ve dropped a couple of points, they dropped a point at Sunderland when it was game, set and match really, a smash-and-grab against Burnley (which they lost 1-0) and a couple of other games where they’ve dropped points but it’s early in the season.
“Daniel will recognise that as well and they’ll want to improve as much as we do. If they take a step back they’ll come forward. We have to take a step forward from our performance tonight.
“We have to reflect and go again. Leeds are by far and away the best team we’ve played all season.”
Leeds need to regroup quickly as they take on Watford this Tuesday night, following the latter’s Saturday loss to Luton Town. The Whites are pushing for a second straight win to maintain their grip on second place as the competition heats up.
