After a slow start to the 2024-25 season, Leeds United has secured two straight wins and is now fifth in the Championship, two points out of first place.
Following the loss to Burnley, there was concern about the promotion prospects as the Whites had dropped out of the top six. Now, after wins against clubs that will be in a relegation battle, Leeds are within striking distance of winning the league.
Moreover, this week can go a long way toward showing their promotion rivals that the Yorkshire side are a serious threat to winning the Championship. Daniel Farke and his team will face Norwich City on Tuesday and Sunderland on Friday.
The mentality Leeds need to have to earn promotion this season
If Leeds secure six of six points in this midweek action, it could help them climb up the table. Moreover, it could show the mindset that Leeds are ready for the grind of a tight right to ensure they finish in the top two automatic promotion spots.
Ahead of a crucial week for the Whites, the BBC’s Jonny Buchan discussed the mentality shift he hopes to see in the squad for this season’s promotion push.
“Last year we were amazing but because of the way the league was, it got away from us, they left it too late to make it back up there,” Buchan said in the latest episode of BBC Radio Leeds’ Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast. “I’m hoping this time round it could be the other way. Let’s be the team that goes and says to everyone else ‘are you coming with us?’ That’s what I’m hoping the mentality within the squad is this year.
“They have the players there who were there last season to still be a part of that to say right, let’s be the runaway ones this time. Let us be the Leicester, the team that everyone has to chase. If they catch us, fair play to them, but let’s go and let’s keep that momentum going. I wonder whether that’s what the challenge has been within.”
Weeks like this one could set the tone for the rest of the season and show that Leeds can beat promotional rivals, something they have struggled to do this season so far.
