Leeds United are battling to get promoted to the Premier League this season. A run of poor form has seen them stumble, but they remain within striking distance of getting the job done this season. However, there is real frustration at the restraint the 49ers have shown in spending money, and there is now a feeling that they need to start pushing the boundaries to take the club to the next level.
Daniel Farke and the Leeds United players have a big game to prepare for on Saturday when they travel to Kenilworth Road to take on Luton Town.
A win could get their season back on track, but anything less than three points could reinforce the feeling that the players are crumbling under pressure at the business end of the season.
The Leeds accounts for last year were released on Tuesday, and they showed the club managed to remain compliant with PSR despite suffering a drop in income and considerable losses.
On Tuesday, Leeds journalist Dan Moylan admitted that he is tired of seeing Leeds working within the financial rules while others bend or break them without much consequence.
He has doubled down on the point today.
‘Let’s be dirty Leeds’ – The Leeds United-covering journalist points at Nottingham Forest
Moylan used Nottingham Forest, who are on the cusp of qualifying for the Champions League with eight games left, as the example for Leeds to follow if they get promoted.
He pointed out that despite getting docked points by the Premier League for breaking PSR, Forest have moved forward, and Leeds can do the same if they go up.
He stressed that Leeds must consider bending the rules, as there is no point in being compliant while others are skirting the regulations in the same league.
“Nottingham Forest were docked four points for breaching the PSR”, Moylan said on the Square Ball Podcast.
“They breached the threshold of ÂŁ61m by an additional ÂŁ34.5m. They appealed and got two points back.
“You are basically looking at somewhere between two and four points for absolutely walloping the PSR limited out of the park.
“Just go do it, doesn’t matter, does it? Stay up by ten points and it’s fine. I advocated for cheating on the show yesterday, and let’s just do it. Let’s cheat.
“Join the party and be proper dirty Leeds, never mind compliant Leeds.”
Forest are the prime example of what can be achieved if an owner is willing to be cavalier
Forest beat Manchester United 1-0 at the City Ground on Tuesday night and are now on the verge of playing Champions League football next season.
They broke the EFL’s financial rules when they got promoted, but they can’t be touched until they get relegated again. The Premier League’s sanctions had little impact on Forest surviving in the top flight last season.
Can you name the missing player from these 10 famous Leeds United photos?
Evangelos Marinakis threw caution to the wind to take Forest forward, and it appears his gamble is set to pay off in a big way by getting European football back to the City Ground.
The 49ers can learn a thing or two from Marinakis, and if Leeds get promoted, they would have to speculate to accumulate to build a squad to sustain in the top flight.
