Major Callum Wilson update: deal could be done soon – Leeds United waiting on player

Leeds United have been linked with some strikers over the last week, as Daniel Farke looks to add firepower to his squad. Newcastle United star Callum Wilson was one of the names on the radar.

The Magpies lost their final game of the season against Everton over the weekend, but still managed to qualify for the Champions League. The St. James’ Park crowd had the chance to give a send off to some members of the squad who were set to leave in the summer. Callum Wilson is one of those, as his current deal runs out next month.

The striker looked emotional as he walked around the stadium, waving to the passionate crowd.

Leeds United have been linked with a move for the 33-year old as they look to boost their squad this summer. Wilson ticks a lot of boxes, and would be available on a free.

But just over 24 hours since Newcastle’s final game, a huge twist has been announced. Magpies boss Eddie Howe revealed that the club will hold talks with Callum Wilson over a new deal:

“Let’s wait and see,” said Howe, when asked whether Wilson was saying a final post-match goodbye. “We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives.

“What I can say is that Callum Wilson is, and has been, an incredible footballer for Newcastle. He’s someone who epitomises the spirit that has got us to where we are.”

Football Insider have now revealed that Leeds are monitoring the situation, as they weigh up a contract offer for the striker. Nothing has been confirmed so far.

Leeds might lose out

With Newcastle in the Champions League next season, Wilson suddenly finds himself as an important part of the team. He is the main option after Alexander Isak, and is happy to play as the back up. Wilson might stay on a similar deal to his current wages too as more incentive.

As it stands, the only thing Leeds can offer him is first team football – an uphill task to fight. Daniel Farke should be looking at other targets until a new development occurs.
