Major update on Kalvin Phillips potential Leeds United return

Manchester City paid £45million for Kalvin Phillips in 2022 after his stunning season for Leeds United.

Phillips won England Men’s player of the year for 2020/21 after a solid season of consistency.

From a player who rarely played for the club, to a key piece transformed by Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds fans thought Phillips would have a long career at the club. But the midfielder chose to test himself at the top level with Manchester City.

Since then, injuries and fitness issues have hampered Phillips which has lead to City loaning him out in back to back seasons. He spent last year on loan at West Ham, and this summer he joined Ipswich Town on a season long loan.

Update on Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips situation

Ever since he fell out of favour at Manchester City, Phillips has been linked to a move with his former club. Many fans at Elland Road are willing to welcome him home and help return him to form, but others are not so keen.

Phillips has started all seven games he has played in the Premier League so far. But Football Insider report that club chiefs at Ipswich Town are not happy with what they have seen from the player. The report says people at the club are “amazed” at Phillips’ conditioning and that it is poor for a Premier League footballer.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna however, believes the midfielder is a vital part of his team as he rubbished news of a return to Leeds United:

“What can I say on that? Proper, proper nonsense.”

“I learned quite a while ago in football that you can write something online and it circulates and gets picked up by quite a lot of media outlets and then it becomes a story. It’s absolute nonsense. There have been no conversations of the like and I think it’s a real, real shame. He had a very good game.”

The door is open once again for a return to Elland Road

The way things stand, unless there is a miraculous turnaround in form, Ipswich may be unwilling to sign Phillips on a permanent deal.

This means Leeds United have a chance of signing the player who left them two years ago. Phillips is not the only Ex-Leeds player who has a chance of returning; Archie Gray has also been linked with a move to Elland Road in January.
